Working mill with water wheel
Free entry
1-minute walk to Lyme Regis beach
Combine with buggy-friendly riverside walk from outskirts of Lyme Regis or longer walk from Uplyme
Stumbled into this little working mill museum in Lyme Regis on a rainy day and it was a nice little pit stop on our riverside walk down to the beach.
With free entry (donations welcomed), you can have a nosey around the working flour mill with its water wheel and demonstrations/talks from the millers showing how the power of water is harnessed to grind down wheat into flour. Flour is still made here today and can be bought in the shop at the entrance.
Understandably with it being a working mill, it’s not a hands-on experience for visitors but interesting to pop in and see the inner workings of the mill and inside the old building. There are steep stairs inside the mill so buggies will need to be parked outside.
If you want to combine this with a walk, park on Roman Road/Colway Lane on the outskirts of Lyme Regis and follow the path alongside the river Lim into the town mill area of Lyme. From the Town Mill, you are only a minute’s walk from the beach and all its cafes and pubs for refreshments. (There is a Brewery Tap Room next to the Town Mill for thirsty parents!)
Click here for a map showing the walk route – parking on Roman Road where it meets Colway Lane is free, the relatively flat walk is surfaced (ideal for buggies) and takes about 15 minutes. Just beware of the steep unfenced drops either side of the path at the end of the walk as you approach the mill.
If you’re looking for a longer walk, park at the Village Hall in Uplyme and follow the River Lim Path – this walk takes about 45 minutes and is buggy friendly, but not always as nicely surfaced (sections are a bit bumpy/rough and a short section of field.)
Nearest loos are public toilets next to the Pilot Boat pub 1 min walk away from the Town Mill towards the beach.
